UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The body that was found behind the football stadium at Piedmont High School by some students Friday morning has been identified.
Officials say the body found was identified as 19-year-old Cody Wyatt Simpson of Love Mill Road in the Unionville community. There was no evidence of foul play.
The students observed an unresponsive person lying in a ditch behind the bleachers of the football stadium around 9 a.m., according to a release from Union County deputies. An emergency medical team pronounced the male deceased on the scene.
Officials say a bicycle was found next to the individual and preliminary information suggests the person might have been involved in a bicycle accident.
“Just shocked that it would happen to us. You know you hear of bodies being found, but you would never think Piedmont and finding a body behind the bleachers,” said student Caleb Baucom. “Everybody is down. They don’t know what to think. Other than that, you can tell it was not a normal day at Piedmont.”
Travis Murphy is friends with the student that found the body.
“This morning I got a text saying they had found a dead body,” said Murphy. “He was one of the first kids to show up to school. Actually saw it, notified the office.”
Detectives say the person was not a student at the school and does not appear to be connected to any of the students or staff.
“Police tape everywhere, crime scene tape everywhere. Didn’t know what was going on,” said student Elijah Price. “It is disturbing that a body was found behind the campus but I am glad it was not a student.”
“When you get to school and find out there is a dead body behind the stadium where you are playing football games, it is weird. Shook me up,” said Baucom.
