Hayes Joins Republican Energy Protest

Congressman Robin Hayes traveled to Washington, D.C. today and joined other House Republicans calling on Congress to return from vacation and pass a comprehensive energy bill.

Dozens of Republicans in the House of Representatives stayed behind after the full House adjourned for vacation. The demonstration started when Republican leader John Boehner demanded the House of Representatives vote on an energy bill instead of taking vacation.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refused to debate any energy bill and upheld a vote to go on vacation.

"Unfortunately Speaker Pelosi strong-armed a measure to adjourn Congress for the month of August," Hayes said in a news release. "So, legislators were sent home without having even one substantive vote to increase domestic production of the oil and natural gas available in this nation."

The Republican leadership supports an "all of the above" energy plan. It would include opening America's coastline, a portion of the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge and Western oil shale deposits to exploration. It would also include development of alternative sources of energy and nuclear power.
