Alexander Correctional Institution was on lockdown Sunday night after multiple fights broke out between inmates earlier in the day.
Sources tell WBTV that four different fights between inmates broke out during the day.
Amidst the fights, sources said, two staff members were injured. One staff member, WBTV was told, suffered a broken nose.
Sources told WBTV that the prison had to be locked down with staff using riot gear and carrying shotguns.
A spokesman for the state’s prison system would only confirm broad details of the incident in an email late Sunday night:
“The information I’ve been able to gather is there were incidents at Alexander Correctional Institution of inmate-on-inmate assaults on Sunday. A staff assault, in which a correctional officer suffered what appears to be non-life-threatening injuries to the facial area, took place in a separate, unrelated incident. All incidents are currently under investigation and the facility is on lockdown.”
Sunday’s incidents at Alexander CI are the latest outbreaks of violence in the state’s prison system.
Dozens of corrections officers have been injured on the job in 2018.
A total of five prison employees were killed on the job the previous year, in 2017.
