ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A man was charged with murder in Alexander County Friday afternoon.
Officials arrested 51-year-old Randy Darryl Shumake on a warrant for the death of 77-year-old Jerry Vinson Hayes
According to Alexander County officials, a call came in Thursday at 11:42 a.m. about to a dead person, identified as Hayes, who had been found by a concerned friend in the woods off of Robinette Road in the Little River Community.
Officials with the Alexander County Sheriff's Office and other emergency personnel responded to the scene.
The medical examiner came to the scene and determined that Hayes had been dead for approximately three days.
Officers began an investigation into the cause of death and discovered that the death apparently happened at Hayes's home and he was taken to a wooded area at a later time.
On Friday, an autopsy was performed at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The preliminary cause of death appears to be blunt force trauma to the head, along with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation led to Shumake being identified as the suspect.
Shumake was arrested without incident Friday morning in Iredell County.
He was taken to the Alexander County Law Enforcement Center, where he is currently being held without bond.
