BURGAW, NC (WECT) -

Thursday night’s Touchstone Energy Pender County Football Jamboree at Pender High School was a dress rehearsal for teams as they get ready for Week 1.

Seven teams — Pender, Topsail, Trask, Richlands, Harrells Christian Academy, East Columbus and North Duplin — participated in the event that was moved from Trask to Pender High because of field conditions.

Topsail coach Wayne Inman said overall he was happy with his team’s performance, but the Pirates defense needs some work.

"We still have some things to clean up defensively,” said Inman. “We are still looking for players. I don't feel like we are sold with the players on the field. We have to improve."

East Columbus finished 1-10 in each of the past three seasons. Second year head coach James Hobbs is rebuilding the culture of the Gators program.

“These kids are young,” said Hobbs. “They have been so much better than in the past, and we’ll see.”

Week 1 of the high school football season is Aug 17.
