Second person charged in Caldwell County deputy shooting

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV ) - A second person has been charged in a deputy's shooting in Caldwell County Sunday.

Deputy Jordan Sherrill, 21, was shot around 11:30 p.m. Sunday on Cheraw Road near Pisgah Church Road while conducting a traffic stop.

James Edgar Roberts, 47, was arrested in the case Thursday evening. The man accused of shooting Sherrill, identified by deputies as Kerry Edwin Townsend, was killed during a confrontation with SWAT officers at a home on Zacks Ford Road in Lenoir Tuesday.

The sheriff said Townsend fired at SWAT members when they surrounded the vacant home and officers fired back.

Townsend's girlfriend, Stephanie Lee Sipes, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact of the attempted murder of Sherrill.

Investigators believe Roberts was driving Townsend and Sipes around with knowledge of their roles in the deputy's shooting.

Officials say Sherrill was approaching a stopped vehicle and wearing a protective vest when he was shot just below the vest.

He was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment. Sherrill is out of surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

Roberts was charged with accessory after the fact to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was given a $1,000,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
