You can’t help but notice the tree as you walk down the street in downtown Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
Outside the ‘Take Heart’ gift shop, there’s a tree adorned with hundreds of white tags fluttering in the wind. Many passers-by notice, the tags are filled with humanity.
“I pray for my Dad to change his life.” Is one of the ones that might break your heart. There are plenty of those.
But there are also ones, scribbled in the handwriting of a child, that will make you smile, “I love my 3 cats and my dog.”
The prayer tree is the product of Sherri Furman, owner of Take Heart.
She says one day, God told her to place wooden hearts and pens outside her store, but she didn’t know why.
She was shocked to come back from an out of town trip to find the tree outside her store was sagging from the weight of all the hearts.
“I went out of town and I came back and I was overwhelmed that the tree was dripping with all the wooden hearts that we had left out,” Furman said.
Her store has since turned to paper tags to save the tree from the weight of the thousands of thoughts.
It’s something that brings humans together. And that’s what pushes Furman to encourage other towns to start the trend.
Take a moment to read the prayers, it might just make your day.
