CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV ) - Caldwell County investigators are trying to find out who stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment from a local park owned by a non profit group.

The South Caldwell Optimist Park was hit by thieves in the early morning hours of July 12. They broke through a chain and entered the park and stole a zero-turn riding lawn mower, a pressure washer, lumber and a trailer.

Shawn Mingus, the director of youth baseball there, says the crooks "stole from the kids."

The equipment is needed for ongoing renovation projects and basic maintenance. Most of the equipment was Mingus' personal gear however the non profit group says they could not afford to replace the stolen items that they need desperately.
