FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) - You will soon have a hefty price to pay for new home construction in one of the most popular places to buy a home in our area.
Fort Mill passed a huge new fee Monday night that will tack on $18,000 to the price of new homes in York County.
The fee was up for a final reading Monday night before being approved. The impact fee would add a $18,000 impact fee per new home built in the town. It's the maximum fee allowed.
The money would help pay for the costs that come along with an increase in school enrollment in the county. The Fort Mill School District stands to benefit from a higher impact fee.
School officials posted on Facebook that this impact fee would allow "growth to pay for growth."
Some members of the Home Builders Association have said they're concerned this will stunt growth and that the full impact of new home construction isn't being considered.
In June, the York County Council voted to move forward with a Fort Mill impact fee. The meeting lasted over four hours.
