UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Officials reminded residents to lock their car doors after a string of thefts from vehicles in Union County Saturday.

According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, a wave of thefts happened early Saturday morning, likely between 2 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. in the Indian Trail neighborhoods of Sandalwood and Brandon Oaks.

Deputies said they took numerous reports after criminals searched through unlocked cars looking for items. Officials say at least one gun was stolen in the thefts.

Authorities want residents to be aware that locking car doors is important when it comes to protecting valuable items.

"Many of these incidents could be avoided if items of value were not left in plain view and doors were locked," the Facebook post read.

No further information was released on these incidents.
