The Major League All-Star week begins Monday, but there are a few big events leading up to the game, and a couple are big once again for a baseball standout on Hilton Head Island.
Matthew Mebane is headed to Washington, DC to compete in the Hit, Run and Throw, and the 14 and Under Home Run hitting contest. It's the third year in a row Mebane has qualified for the trip to All-Star Week and the home run derby. He's gotten there by putting in six-hour days before heading to his summer job.
"Well, if you want to be the best, you have to train like the best. If you want to be in the Major Leagues, you have to put in the work. They put in the work that nobody sees," Mebane said.
His dad sees it everyday, as Frank Mebane is the batting practice pitcher, sharing a father-son bond.
"He wants to be in the Major Leagues. He sees himself in the Major Leagues, so if he's at home he's watching Major Leagues, so that's where he wants to wind up, so that's where his drive is," he said.
Matthew is especially looking forward to this year because his sister lives in Washington, DC. The Hilton Head High rising sophomore finished third last year 13-year-old old in the 14 and under division.
