CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A now-former security guard at a Charlotte middle school was charged with sex crimes involving a female student Wednesday.
CMPD says 26-year-old Mario McIlwain was accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old female student over a period of time between February and May at Alexander Graham Middle School, where McIlwain was employed as a security guard/behavioral management technician.
Police said the girl's mother told officers that McIlwain sexually assaulted her daughter on multiple occasions from February 2018 until May 2018. McIlwain was then interviewed, arrested and charged with nine counts of sex act by custodian, seven counts of statutory rape, two counts of statutory sex offense, and nine counts of indecent liberties with a child.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed that McIlwain was hired in Feb 2018 as a security associate and his employment ended on Tuesday.
CMS released a statement Wednesday night.
While many students are out of school for the summer, some people still visit the middle school campus for athletic events. South Charlotte resident Silvia Falconi was walking her dogs around the campus Wednesday night and spoke to WBTV about the troubling allegations.
"It's frightening and it's very disturbing at the same time," said Falconi. "These are people that we entrust our children to. These are adults that are supposed to be the leaders."
Mcilwain was in court Thursday. In his hearing, he was appointed an attorney and issued a no contact order.
Detectives are asking anyone with additional information about the case or McIlwain to call Detective Ockerman at 704-432-3905 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
