Small earthquake rumbles in WNC near VA border

BOONE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A small earthquake was detected in Western North Carolina near the Virginia line early Wednesday morning.

The US Geological Survey said the 1.9 magnitude earthquake occurred just after 1:20 a.m.

The epicenter was 16 miles southwest of Boone, NC and 24 miles southeast of Johnson City, TN.

Small earthquakes are common in the Appalachian mountains and most are not felt by humans.
