CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A person was hospitalized with serious injuries after being shot in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the shooting happened in the 1200 block of Central Avenue near Hawthrone Lane in east Charlotte around 2:30 a.m. Police said they received a call that two people were fighting with each other.

That's when officers found a person in the parking lot of TUFT, which is a furniture store, who had been shot. The victim is an employee at the bar Pint Central.

TUFT and Pint Central are located right next to each other.

MEDIC said the shooting victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, officers say they found a second person who had been involved in the fight on Carter Avenue. Police say the second person was not shot but was taken to the hospital with injuries caused during the fight. Officers believe the second person is the alleged shooter. The victim and alleged shooter did not know each other, police say.

James Simmons was charged in connection to the shooting, officials say.

A portion of Central Avenue was closed for some time while crews investigated the shooting.
