ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Longtime Rowan County firefighter and North Rowan High School graduate Michael Goodnight was laid to rest on Monday.

Hundreds of family members, friends, and fellow firefighters turned out for the visitation held at the West Liberty Fire Department, and the internment held at Rowan Memorial Park.

Goodnight, 55, was killed on July Fourth while responding to a call on Gold Knob Road.

Reverend John Schell of St. Luke's Reformed Church delivered the message during the funeral.  Special music included Christy Trexler performing "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone."

The procession included dozens of firetrucks and emergency vehicles from agencies both in and out of Rowan County.  Goodnight's flag draped casket was carried on top of a West Liberty firetruck.

The internment ceremony included West Liberty Chief Darrin Trexler presenting the America flag to Goodnight's family.  Deputy Chief Jeff Miller presented Goodnight's helmet.

Goodnight served for the last two years with the West Liberty Fire Department, but had also served with Union and East Spencer.
