CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - One man has been arrested after a Charlotte ice cream man was brutally beaten and robbed while on the job.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, 22-year-old Romell Mackey was with charged armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and felony larceny of a vehicle in connection to the beating and robbery of Toribio Alberto.
Alberto says multiple people attacked him on Archdale Drive Tuesday night and now he's gotten broken bones and can't work.
Luckily, he has the support of the community.
Alberto's face has been on the mend since he was jumped near a shopping complex on Archdale Drive.
He spoke to WBTV through a translator Friday night. He says two men acted like they wanted to buy ice cream then turned the tables on him.
"They say they wanted ice cream so I opened my car and when I opened my car, another pulls around me and puts a gun to me," Alberto said.
What he thought was going to be a purchase turned into a robbery.
"They were trying to take my things and I was trying for them not to and then that's when they through me to the ground and started beating me up," Alberto said.
He says he was punched and kicked and with his face swollen badly after the attack, he ended up spending a night in the hospital.
"Multiple fractures in the nose, a fracture there, lot of bruising and swelling and it hurts so much everywhere on my face," Alberto described.
This also hurts him financially. Alberto says the men took his wallet, the money he had made Tuesday, and his cellphone.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by his friends.
"It makes me very happy that Charlotte as a community is coming together and helping me and supporting me," Alberto said.
Alberto says the doctors told him he shouldn't work for at least 15 days. We're asking police if they're still looking for anyone else involved in this attack.
No further information has been released by police.
