Firefighters battle flames and heat at vacant motel in west Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Fifteen firefighters were treated and a portion of a road in west Charlotte was shut down as crews worked to battle a fire at a vacant motel Friday.

According to the Charlotte Fire Department, the second-alarm fire broke out at the abandoned Airport Parkway Inn on Berryhill Road at Wilkinson Boulevard. Firefighters tweeted about the blaze shortly before 1 p.m.

On Saturday, officials confirmed the fire was intentionally set and was under further investigation.

The firefighters received IV's at the scene. Officials said they were making sure the firefighters were re-hydrated and that their blood pressures were monitored before allowing them to go back to work.

Wilkinson Boulevard was shut down as crews worked at the scene. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Property loss was valued at $193,000.
