Scam Alert: Person impersonating Burke County law enforcement official

BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Authorities are warning the public of a scam where a person is pretending to be an official from the Burke County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Burke County Sheriff's Office, there have been multiple reports of citizens receiving phone calls where the caller using the name of Sgt. Larry Turner, Deputy Wood, or some other name, who claims to be with the Burke County Sheriff's Office.

This scammer advises the person they are speaking with has a legal matter, such as failure to report to court, or some other situation that can be resolved over the phone by sending money, purchasing a green dot card, among other things.

The scammer threatens that if they do not pay, the citizen will be arrested.

Officials say this is a scam, as the Burke County Sheriff's Office or any other law enforcement agency would never settle a legal matter over the phone by requesting money or asking for you to purchase a card for payment.  

Authorities say if you get a phone call like this, simply hang up.
