A man charged with killing a well-known Iredell County businessman in 2017 is facing additional charges connected to the fatal shooting.
Hugh Moose was shot to death in his home on Shiloh Road in Statesville on Jan. 10, 2017. Deputies responded to a 911 call around 7:30 that night. When they arrived, they saw Moose, 80, through a window inside the home.
In April of 2018, officials charged Mark Arnold Pinkerton, a convicted felon, with murder in Moose's death. He was arrested in Pennsylvania.
When deputies went to PA to pick him up, Pinkerton confessed to the killing, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff said an interview led detectives to develop a witness who gave a statement about Pinkerton. That witness said Pinkerton had asked him if he wanted to help him in carrying out a robbery with Hugh Moose as the victim.
On Monday, new charges brought against Pinkerton confirmed investigators believe robbery was the motive. He is now charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and felony first-degree burglary.
Deputies now say Pinkerton went to Moose's home to rob him to get drug money. They say he forced his way into the home and took cash from Moose's wallet after shooting him.
The gun used in the crime was also located in Iredell County, not far from Moose's home.
Pinkerton was given a $100,000 bond on the new charges. He is still behind bars with no bond on the murder charge.
