IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A man is accused of stealing a riding lawnmower from a church in Iredell County last month.

A report was filed May 25 alleging an Aries riding lawnmower was stolen from the Laura Memorial Church of God's storage building. The building is located on Charlotte Highway in Mooresville.

The suspect, 38-year-old Newton Marcell Brown Jr., had been given permission in the past to stay in the church's fellowship hall. Officials say he knew where the mower was kept.

Residents told detectives Brown sold the riding lawnmower to a family member, who was unaware that the mower had been stolen from the church.

Brown was charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny after breaking and entering and felony obtaining property by false pretense. Brown was arrested Friday and given a $10,000 secured bond.

The lawnmower was eventually recovered and returned to the church.
