CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV ) - Thousands of people who live in Caldwell County are waking up without power Tuesday morning after strong storms swept through the area.
According to the Duke Energy outage map, over 1,600 residents are without power. Most of the outages were first reported around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon.
There are over 70 different outage locations, according to the outage map.
Crews say power is expected to be restored around 11:30 p.m.
A First Alert Day was in effect on Monday and strong storms swept through the area during the evening hours. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for the entire WBTV viewing area until 10 p.m. Monday.
A wave of storms swept across the WBTV viewing area Monday evening uprooting several trees in some places including Caldwell County.
A family was inside their home when their house shifted and the floor fell a few feet as a tree collapsed on the roof. The large tree caused the house to split in half.
WBTV spoke to the homeowner who says he and his two teenager daughters were inside when it happened. Fortunately, the entire family is okay.
Staff at the Caldwell County Health Department were forced to move vaccines in the building to the hospital for safekeeping due to the power outage.
