CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Mount Pleasant's mayor says the SCDOT will postpone cable inspections on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge after work caused a traffic delay Wednesday.

Mayor Will Haynie said the traffic slowdown prompted him to request the agency delay the inspections while traffic is being rerouted because of repairs to the Wando Bridge.

"We asked them to postpone this considering all we’re dealing with caused by the 526 bridge issue," he said in a tweet posted Wednesday afternoon.

SCDOT responded saying the inspections would end Wednesday, Haynie said.

Just before noon, a man was spotted scaling the cables above the bridge, slowing traffic as curious drivers wondered what was happening. SCDOT cameras showed a small black dot on the bridge cable, which dispatchers identified as a transportation department worker.

The work entailed "normal manual inspection of the Ravenel," according to SCDOT Deputy Secretary Leland Colvin.

SCDOT spokesman James Law said this was a routine inspection that happen periodically. Before Haynie's request, Law said the inspection was expected to be completed Thursday, weather permitting.

It is not clear how often this type of inspection occurs or when they began.
