NC teachers rally for raises, working conditions

NC TEACHER RALLY: Team coverage.

Today is the day. Teachers have started a movement and conversation about needing pay raises and better working conditions. They say it's for them and their students. Today, thousands of them will descend on the state capital in Raleigh. Twelve school districts closed school today so teachers can take part. We're covering all angles of the story starting at 4:30am. WBTV's Micah Smith is positioned in Charlotte where teachers in our area will be loading buses to drive to Raleigh in the 5 a.m. hour. WBTV's Nick Ochsner has been in Raleigh getting lawmakers to respond to what the teachers are asking for. You'll hear their reaction. Plus, not only are teachers participating in the rally but also students and parents.

The rain is going to have an impact on the day for sure. Here in our area and in Raleigh for the rally and march. Our team of meteorologists has declared a First Alert Day today. It's our way of preparing you for what's in store. Make sure you're watching Meteorologist Al Conklin's forecast. He has been saying we're getting a stretch of rain this week, so you can count on his accurate forecast.

There's a call to action from teachers happening in South Carolina too. We'll tell you when teachers there will be marching and if it will impact many of you who have students in the South Carolina school system.

It's happening. Behind the scenes, sources are saying the Carolina Panthers new owner will be billionaire David Tepper. We'll have more on when it will officially be announced and reaction from Panthers fans on what they want to see from this new owner.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Two accident this morning have been causing issues on interstate. One has I-77 northbound blocked at Arrowood Road. Right now we're seeing one lane of I-85 northbound blocked near exit 49 from a tractor trailer crash. Watch now for updates.

ALERT CENTER: Is North Korea pivoting? The country is threatening to cancel next month's highly anticipated summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un if they believe the negotiations will only drive them into a corner. Kristen Miranda is following this developments and will have details first if this meeting is called off.
