Rainy pattern starts Tuesday

Low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico pumps tropical moisture across our area for the next several days. Rain chances will increase and stay elevated through this weekend.

Cloud cover increases through the day on Tuesday, with highs cooling back down to the low 80s in the Upstate and upper 70s in the mountains. Scattered showers and isolated storms develop by lunch and into the afternoon, with only a few peeks of sunshine breaking through.

Rain becomes more widespread as the moisture flow gets good and established into Wednesday. We'll see off and on rain, with pockets of heavy downpours. Highs will stay near normal for this time of year.

Our best potential for any storms comes on Thursday, but the off and on rain will continue through the weekend, and that could mean some localized flooding by Friday into Saturday. The good news is that the forcing won't be incredibly strong, which means we shouldn't see constant, torrential rainfall. However, as the ground saturates through the week, it might not take much to cause some issues. Our severe threat will also be minimal due to the tropical nature of the atmosphere (warmer aloft, creating less vigorous updrafts and ultimately weaker storms).

We are ahead on rain for 2018, but slightly behind for the month of May. We'll make up that deficit quickly as we could see between 3-5 inches of rainfall by late in the weekend!
