The Carolina Panthers moved fast to fill their vacancy at defensive coordinator as defensive line coach Eric Washington has been promoted to DC. Earlier in the day, Steve Wilks was named the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Washington has been the defensive line coach for the Panthers since 2010. In his time in that position, the line has had 2 All Pro players, 2 Pro Bowl selections, and 3 All Rookie players.
Washington's defensive lines have been very productive. Since 2012, the Panthers D-Line has 219 sacks-- the most in the NFL.
When it comes to stopping the run, they have been solid there as well as the Panthers defense has been top 6 in stopping the rush in 4 of the last 6 years.
This is the 2nd straight season the Panthers will break in a new defensive coordinator. Last season, Wilks took over for Sean McDermott who got the head coaching job at Buffalo.
In his one season as DC, Wilks help lead a defense that was 7th in the NFL in overall defense and was 3rd in sacks with 50.
