BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A woman was killed in a crash on Interstate 40 in Burke County Wednesday morning.
Highway Patrol says the fatal crash happened on I-40 eastbound near Exit 118 near Connelly Springs. A detour was put in place while the interstate was blocked off for hours following the wreck. The lanes have since reopened.
Troopers say a woman swerved to avoid a tractor-trailer coming into her lane and flipped over a guardrail into the eastbound lanes. Highway Patrol said the woman's vehicle flipped several times and she died on scene.
According to NCDOT, the crash happened around 8 a.m.
Troopers expect the roadway to be reopened by noon.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as James Rochester III, has been charged with failure to maintain his lane and misdemeanor death by vehicle. When Rochester was asked what he thought happened, he replied "I don't know."
The woman's name has not been released.
