GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Cold temperatures are to blame for several water main breaks in Gastonia this week. Since Jan. 2, the city has had nine water mains rupture because of pressure frozen soil put on the pipes.
Gastonia officials say more than 1,700 residential and business customers have lost water because of the problems.
Repairs can take up to nine hours.
Tuesday, a water main break on East Ozark Avenue resulted in water being turned off for the entire town of Ranlo until 10:30 p.m. The city of Gastonia provides water to Ranlo.
Thursday, 97 apartment residents along Hudson Landing Drive lost water for six hours, officials say.
Friday, Gastonia crews responded to another water main break in the 1700 block of Winget Street affecting nearly 60 customers. Water service is expected to be restored around 9 p.m.
City officials ask residents to report problems if they see water gushing from a manhole or bubbling up through a crack in the street.
