Power restored to hundreds in Avery County

AVERY COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Power was restored to more than 1,000 Avery County residents Friday.

Officials say the outage derived from a problem at a substation in Linville. The outages were reported Thursday.

Crews said there was still a "decent sized outage" Friday morning and crews were out trying to restore power. By 1:30 p.m., officials said nearly all power had been restored. Crews say the outage stretched from Jonas Ridge to Linville.

The outage came with five-degree temperatures and a below zero wind chill in Linville. The Rock Gym in Newland was opened as a warming shelter for some time but has since closed overnight.

The Avery County Sheriff's Department was helping to set up the warming center with local emergency management officials. Deputies said they will be on the lookout for people who need help.

Anyone who needs a ride to the shelter can get one from the Avery County Sheriff's Office by calling 828-733-5855.
