Police: Masked gunman strikes clerk in head with gun during robbery

STANLY COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Two men are wanted in connection with an armed robbery that occurred at a convenience store in Albemarle Friday morning.

According to Albemarle police, the incident happened at a Speedway convenience store on US Highway 52 North just after midnight. Police say two masked gunmen entered the store and demanded money from the clerk while pointing a gun at him.

Officers say one of the gunmen reportedly struck the clerk in the back of the head with the gun, stole money and three cartons of cigarettes before fleeing the scene.

A customer started to enter the store as the two gunmen were leaving, according to police. The customer then reportedly left the business and called 911, officers said.

Police say the robbers were caught on surveillance footage. One man was reportedly wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white bandana on his face during the incident. The man was around 5-foot-11, police say.

The second gunman was wearing a red, white and black sweatshirt and blue jeans with a red bandana over his face. The second gunman was around 5-foot-9, according to officers. Police say the two men fled from the store on foot.
