NEWLAND, NC (WBTV) - Bitter cold temperatures moved into the Carolinas over the weekend and in the mountains many areas flirted with zero degrees. It was cold enough that the waterfall at Waterfalls Park in Newland was frozen over, except for a small trickle of water flowing under a corner of the ice.
It is expected to get even colder in the coming days. Overnight temperatures at the end of the week could be below zero. Authorities are urging people to be prepared with extra supplies and to be careful when traveling around the mountains.
Some areas are slick because of weekend snowfall. Police officers and sheriff deputies will be on the lookout for stranded motorists.
