BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC (WBTV) - Mountain resorts are packed as conditions for skiing and other winter activities are perfect for the week between Christmas and the new year.
While the cold temperatures are welcome, say officials, the near-zero temperatures expected in some spots in the coming days are not.
"Many of the tourists are not prepared for it," said Fred Pfohl who runs a general store on Beech Mountain. "I see them come in wearing shorts when it is below 20."
At High South Towing, Jody Puckett urges drivers to have blankets, extra coats, some food, water, and a charged cellphone in their cars as they travel in the next week. Roads are clear of any snow, but even a flat tire or dead battery could put those in the car in danger, he said.
"It can happen real quick."
