CORNELIUS, NC (WBTV) - Police in Cornelius are asking for the public's help identifying a man who reportedly tried to rob a local store over the weekend.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. Saturday at the Home Depot on Statesville Road. Witnesses told officers that a man "acted as if he had a handgun" and told the cashier to open the register.

The cashier told the robber to take whatever he wanted and another cashier dialed 911. Investigators say that scared the would-be robber and he ran from the store into the parking lot where two other men were waiting.

Police say two of the men ran into the woods toward I-77 and the third drove away southbound on Statesville road in a tan or gold Mercury Marquis.

Anyone who can identify the man or the vehicle caught on surveillance video is asked to call North Meck Crimestoppers at 704-896-7867 or the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773.
