WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

As Wilmington's population continues to grow, WAVE Transit says it is increasing communication with both the city and developers to improve bus stop locations and rider experience.

WAVE's Deputy Director Megan Matheny said with more development in the area, WAVE is coordinating with more customers, business owners and developers to best suit the needs of the community.

"New businesses come in, they contact WAVE Transit and request that a stop be put in," Matheny said. "Or, if we don't currently have a route that services their location, we've worked with employers to put their request on the books."

WAVE recently added passenger amenities to a stop adjacent to the Academy Sports and Outdoors, which is set to open this week in Wilmington.

David Edmonds, project manager with S&H Centre Development Corp, the property owner/developer, said they worked with WAVE and added a concrete platform for the upgraded ADA compliant bus stop.

"During the review process with the City of Wilmington, WAVE Transit requested a new stop due to increased traffic to our new retail shopping center and we were happy to oblige their request for the ADA compliant bus stop," Edmonds said

Matheny added that several customers have requested bus service to Porters Neck. She said that request is being considered during WAVE's five-year, short range transit planning initiative. According to Matheny, the plan is slated to conclude with a final report in March 2018.

WAVE customers are able to request a stop using this form.
