Thousands without power in Meck, Rowan counties following severe storms

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Severe storms knocked out power to thousands in Mecklenburg and Rowan counties for some time Friday afternoon.

According to the Duke Energy outage map, over 5,000 residents in Mecklenburg County were without power around 3:45 p.m. Just before 5 p.m., over 3,000 Duke Energy customers were without power.

A large tree damaged power lines on Sharon Lane in south Charlotte. Several homes in the area lost power.

"It'll come on when it does. Obviously I'd prefer sooner versus later but given what the people are dealing with in Texas if I've gotta be without power for a few minutes I think I can handle it and not complain too much," said neighbor Jason Wilson.

Over 1,000 Duke Energy customers in Rowan County were without power as of 3:45 p.m. Officials with Catawba College said power was out for parts of the school.

Duke Energy officials did not say what time the power was expected to be restored for Rowan County residents.
