Safe driving is an important practice throughout the entire year, but even more so when school gets back into session. Not only are there more cars on the road, you’ll also find a lot more pedestrians crossing as well as school buses out and about. That’s why Toyota of N Charlotte is here – to impart some wisdom when it comes to safe driving during the school year! Whether you’re going to be in the carpool line or you’re just heading through school zones to get to work, these safe driving tips can make your daily commute a whole lot easier.
For starters, be aware of school zones. These areas can be trickier to drive in because the speed limits change, there are more road rules to abide by, and pedestrians abound. Be sure you pay full attention to the road (including road signs indicating necessary driving changes) and come to complete stops at stop signs and red lights. Also, pay attention to crossing guards and follow their instructions, and always check crosswalks before pulling through them.
If you’re going to school, be sure you abide by the school zone rules as noted but also avoid stopping in the middle of the street to drop students off. Only drop in designated zones and if you let your kids off elsewhere, ensure they know to use the crosswalks to get where they need to go.
Buckle up – and check to ensure all of your passengers are buckled up, too. You should have a rule that everyone must be wearing their seatbelt before you even leave the driveway. Not only is it the law, it ensures everyone’s much safer should you get into an accident or collision. Everyone should stay buckled until you reach your final destination and the car is in park.
Use your best defensive driving skills. Defensive driving basically entails paying close attention to what’s going on around you so you can react BEFORE an accident or collision happens. You should stop entertaining any distractions when behind the wheel, leave enough distance between you and other drivers, and ensure you follow the speed limit so you have enough time to react accordingly if need be.
Make sure your car is ready for the road. Part of safe driving is having a safe car! Toyota of N Charlotte recommends having qualified techs check your tires, wipers, lights, brakes, and battery before you hit the road this semester. On top of that, ensure all car fluids are full and clean, including and especially your car’s oil.
