Knights Beat the Bulls 2-1 Tuesday
Cody Asche’s RBI Double Leads Knights to Comeback Victory

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- LHP David Holmberg tossed seven shutout innings, and Cody Asche ripped a go-ahead, RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Charlotte Knights to a 2-1 win over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday in game two of their four-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Knights battled back against the Durham bullpen. Reliever Jose Alvarado (0-2, 3.18) came on to begin the eighth inning and quickly got into trouble. Alvarado walked three batters in the inning and eventually served up the RBI double to Asche in the inning.

The Knights scored first in the game and did so in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run off the bat of outfielder Rymer Liriano. The 355-foot blast was Liriano’s 17th of the season and it gave Charlotte a 1-0 lead over the Bulls. Liriano had two of the team’s six hits.

Holmberg was sharp over his seven scoreless frames, but did not factor in the decision. The Charlotte lefty allowed just six hits on the night and struck-out six batters. He left with a 1-0 lead, but the Bulls came back with a run in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Willy Adames. The run came off reliever Matt Purke (4-5, 3.88), who earned the win.

In the top of the ninth inning, reliever Al Alburquerque struck-out two batters to notch his first save of the season.

The Knights will continue their four-game series on Wednesday against the Durham Bulls. First pitch is on tap for 7:05 p.m. and gates will open at 6:00 p.m. for Queens University Night. Jack McDowell, the 1993 American League Cy Young Award winner and current Queens University head baseball coach, will throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch. The Knights will also celebrate Greek Heritage Night.
