CORNELIUS, NC (WBTV) -

A No Swimming advisory was lifted for a portion of Lake Norman in Cornelius Tuesday due to a sewage spill.

The advisory, issued Wednesday, affected the area near the 16800 block of Jetton Road. Officials said around 200 gallons of raw sewage was discharged into the lake from a storm water pipe.

The actual spill happened on the 18800 block of Harbor Light Boulevard. Officials said crews repaired the broken pipe earlier Tuesday.

"Water samples collected in the cove by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ staff reveal that bacteria counts are within safe limits; therefore, the swimming advisory has been lifted," county officials said Thursday.

“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” said Cam Coley, spokesperson for Charlotte Water. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not breakdown in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”

Officials gave several tips on how you can help:

  • Toss in the trash: paper towels, wipes, hair, cotton swabs, feminine products, dental floss, coffee grounds, and excess food.
  • Toss in the toilet: only toilet paper.
  • Drain in the sink: soap suds, small amounts of foods from plate, and liquids.
  • Take to a full-service recycling center: used and expired oils and grease.
