CATAWBA COUNTY, NC -

Hundreds of children are heading back to school in Hickory Monday morning, with two schools offering some changes for students.

According to a spokesperson with Hickory Public Schools, Southwest Elementary converted to Southwest Primary School and is now a K-2 school instead of offering classes from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Southwest Primary will offer dual enrollment Spanish immersion classes in kindergarten, the spokesperson said.

Southwest Primary's partnering school, Longview Elementary, is now a third through fifth grade school, the spokesperson said. Longview Elementary will "focus on literacy while the upper grade school will focus on STEAM," according to the spokesperson.

Stephanie Dischiavi, who formerly worked at Northview Middle School, is Southwest Primary's new principal.

According to the spokesperson, the 2017-2018 school year marks Superintendent's Dr. Robbie Adell third year with Hickory Public Schools.
