CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Monday is the first day of school for the 2017-2018 year at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Thousands of students will be headed back to class, but not without a fresh haircut and new school supplies.

It was the second year for "The Big Cut" event, hosted by Ms. Jessica from Power 98 Morning Madhouse radio show. More than 100 students from kindergarten to high school gathered at the McCrorey YMCA for a
haircut before the first day of school.

Twenty-five hairdressers and barbers offered their services for free. Meanwhile, 200 backpacks were donated and passed out at no charge.

"I think it's so important that we make sure our kids feel good about themselves on the first day of school so that they are ready to go in there and attack the school year, you know feeling self-confident,"
Jessica Williams said.

Parents were also able to attend parenting advice sessions hosted by Triple P, Positive Parenting Program, with the Mecklenburg County Health Department.

The event runs until 6:00 p.m. Any student in the community is welcome.
