HICKORY, NC (WBTV) -

Police are warning the public of a phone scam in which scammers are impersonating law enforcement officers and telling residents they failed to report for jury duty.

According to the Hickory Police Department, scammers are "impersonating law enforcement and notifying citizens that they failed to appear for jury duty, have outstanding warrants, or other law enforcement related circumstance."

Police say the scammers then tell residents to send them money through Western Union, money cards or by other payment methods.

Officers said the Hickory Police Department will not call residents to request money.

Police say if you receive a call from the "Hickory Police Department" or another law enforcement agency, do not send money or release any of your personal information to the caller.
