CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Water Quality Advisory was issued for two ponds at a southeast Charlotte park following a sewage spill Friday.

According to a spokesperson with Mecklenburg County, a private facility discharged sewage Friday which entered a small stream that flows into two ponds at McAlpine Creek Park on Monroe Road.

The county says "necessary repairs" are underway.

County officials released this statement Friday:

"Staff with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services will continue to test water quality in the pond until bacteria levels are determined to be within safe ranges at which time the WATER QUALITY advisory will be lifted."

Rusty Rozzelle, who is the water quality program manager for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, said "the advisories are standard procedure."

"It is important to ensure that citizens are aware of potential risks from polluted waters so they can take the appropriate precautions by avoiding contact," Rozzelle said.
