UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Officials in Union County confirmed a skunk that bit a man early Tuesday morning tested positive for rabies.

The incident happened on the 700 block of Roanoke Church Road near Unionville. A woman contacted WBTV Wednesday about the incident.

"My fiance was bitten by a skunk on the back porch early morning hours yesterday... who would think a skunk would be under your chair and bite your feet!" the woman wrote.

The woman said her fiance "ended up beating [the skunk] over the head and put a bucket over it" until EMS and the sheriff arrived. The animal was then sent for testing.

The tests came back positive for rabies.

Union County Communications Officer Brett Vines said the Health Department contacted the victim and told him to go to the hospital to begin treatment.

No other information has been released.
