SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - The Rowan-Salisbury School system held its annual Back To School Teacher Conference on Tuesday morning at South Rowan High School.

Along with the breakout sessions for teachers, and a word from Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody, there was also a time to honor the new Teacher and Principal of the Year.

Abby Covington, a 4th grade teacher at Millbridge, was honored as the 2017 Teacher of the Year.  Covington was presented with a tiara, a sash, a special plaque, a $1000 gift certificate from the Rowan Chamber for use in her classroom, and the use of a new Honda from Gerry Wood Honda of Salisbury.

"I think it takes somebody who is really able to verbalize their passion and their heart for what they do," Covington said.  "Someone who can say all the things that are right about public education.  We're in a time where we hear that we are not paid enough and our career is not respected enough and that it's really hard to be a teacher.  Some of those things are true, but there are so many things that are great about being a teacher and it is a career that is fun everyday."

Angelo DelliSanti was honored as the Principal of the Year.  Mr. DelliSanti is principal at Jesse Carson High School.  DelliSantil was presented a $500 gift certificate from Belk in Salisbury.

Classes begin for students on Monday, August 28.
