HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - A driver is wanted in a deadly hit-and-run that happened early Monday morning in Hickory.

Hickory police say 54-year-old Ricky James Yelton was struck after he wrecked his moped near the intersection of Startown Road and 23rd Street Drive SE. It happened around 5:41 a.m.

Yelton was pronounced dead on scene.

Police are looking for a red 2007 Daewoo Optra, a 2007 Suzuki Forenza or a 2007 Chevy Optra with damage to the front driver's side. Lieutenant Wes Gardin, with the Hickory Police Department, said there was significant damage to the suspected driver's vehicle. "In the right rear wheel well," Gardin said.

Ray Lail wiped away tears Wednesday afternoon as he talked about his brother-in-law Yelton.

"He was a good fella," Lail said.

Pieces of the car were recovered at the scene. Gardin hopes an auto body shop or a auto parts store may have have had contact with the driver.  Lail says the family needs to know what happened.

"My 10-year-old daughter is all broken up about it," Lail said.

He pleaded for whoever is responsible to call police. "Please turn yourself in," Lail said.
