SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - There was a noticeable absence at Carson High School's first football game on Friday, but that loss was remembered in a touching way by players.
The mother of head coach Joe Pinyan passed away a few weeks ago.
Sylvia Pinyan was her son's biggest fan, always attending games whenever possible whether it was at Carson, during Coach Pinyan's state championship run at Salisbury High, and at Mooresville High.
On Friday night Mrs. Pinyan was remembered in a very special way when players placed decals on their helmets bearing the initials of the late mother of their head coach.
"She was always at their games and now she will be on the field with them and Joe," Coach pinyan's wife Gina posted to social media. "Thank you so much for honoring the memory of Sylvia Marie Aldridge Pinyan! We are truly blessed to be a part of the Carson family!"
Fittingly, Carson won the game, defeating South Rowan 18-15.
