CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Sinkhole repairs will start Monday on Mallard Creek Road after early-week storms washed out the roadway.
The 20-foot-wide by 15-foot-deep area opened on Mallard Creek Road between Polk and White Road and Johnston Oehler Road, stretching across both lanes.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation estimates the road will be reopened by Labor Day, weather permitting.
Crews will be working to replace an existing pipe with a larger one, which is around 14 feet wide and 8.5 feet tall. The new pipe is expected to arrive Tuesday.
The Charlotte Water Department will also be working on relaying a new water line.
"A detour remains in place for motorists along Mallard Creek Road, Prosperity Church Road, and Johnston-Oehler Road back to Mallard Creek Road," NCDOT says.
Mallard Creek High School is not far from the sinkhole. With school set to re-open soon, bus drivers may have to make adjustments.
"School buses will have to be rerouted," Jen Thompson with the NCDOT said. "We'll have to communicate with them about another plan to get kids in and out of the area."
