Move-in day for new Winthrop University students

YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) - Hundreds of freshmen are moving into dorms for the first time at Winthrop University Friday.

New students started arriving at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning to get settled into their new homes.

Dozens of members of sororities and fraternities on campus were standing on the curbs waiting to welcome the new students. They also help them carry their things to their dorms.

Senior Nolan Gregory said they take the stairs at the seven-floor Wofford Dormitory, even with futons and TVs.

Gregory says it is a great way for students to earn community service hours and make the freshmen feel at home.

"We get to talk to them, they get to ask us questions as well, so it's about that as well. It at least calms them down, we try to get them to know at least one person, upperclassmen wise. If they have any questions we will answer it for them," Gregory said.

Freshmen finish moving in Friday afternoon. Upper classmen are scheduled to move in Sunday.

Classes are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Monday.
