CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Greg Pope can remember from childhood, the soft sizzling sounds of tomatoes frying in the pan. It’s the memory that inspired him to submit his idea of a Fried Green Tomato flavored potato chip to Lay’s.

The Charlotte man submitted his flavor idea as part of the "Do Us A Flavor" contest.

“I sent it in and then didn’t hear anything from them, so I just forgot all about it,” Pope said.

He’d forgotten all about his submission, when one day a few months ago, he got an email from company representatives telling him his idea had been selected as a finalist in the contest.

Along with his flavor idea, Pope was asked to submit a short story explaining his submission. Growing up in Macon, Georgia, the memories of the unripened summer treat are still close to his heart.

“My grandad would grow the tomatoes and my dad would fry them,” Pope wrote in his letter.

His "Fried Green Tomato" flavor is competing against “Everything Bagels” and “Crunchy Taco.” The winner wins a $1 million prize.

“To see your face on the back of the chips, it’s very cool,” Pope said.

The contest now relies on online votes to determine a winner. Fans can vote at www.lays.com or on the company’s Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter accounts. You can vote once a day until October 8.
