Knights Fall to Mud Hens 5-3 Tuesday
Toledo Scores Two Runs in 10th Inning for Game One Win

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) – The Charlotte Knights dropped the opening game of their three-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte, NC. The ‘Hens scored two runs the top of the 10th inning en route to the game one victory over the Knights.

The Knights and Mud Hens battled to a 3-3 tie after nine full innings. In the 10th, the Knights handed the ball to LHP Matt Purke (3-5, 4.20), who was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in the inning.

In the final frame of the night, Purke allowed three singles in the 10th inning, as well as a costly wild pitch. With runners on first and third with two outs, Jim Adduci scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Tyler Collins then singled home the second run of the inning to give the Mud Hens a 5-3 lead at that point.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Knights brought the tying run to first base and the go-ahead run to the plate. Still, despite a late-inning rally, Toledo RHP Edward Mujica shut the door to earn his 13th save of the season.

Offensively for the Knights, Jake Peter led the way with two hits. Jacob May, who made a diving catch in the sixth inning, had an RBI. Tyler Ladendorf and Roberto Pena also chipped in with RBIs for the Knights, who tallied a total of six hits.

Charlotte RHP Carson Fulmer started and allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings of work. Relievers Jean Machi (2.0 innings), David Holmberg (1.0 inning), and Danny Farquhar (1.0 inning) did not allow a run in four innings combined.

The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. game. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. and the Knights will host their Second Annual Mustache Bash, presented by Shear Excellence. Jack Morris, a five-time All-Star, will meet fans and sign autographs as part of the Harris Teeter and Gain Celeb Series. After the game, the Knights will light-up the Uptown Charlotte skyline with post-game fireworks presented by BB&T and News Talk 1110 WBT.

Pre-game radio coverage of Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. game will begin at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and The “Voice of the Charlotte Knights” Matt Swierad and long-time Knights radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action on Turnback Tuesday.
