GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

The 15-year-old boy who went missing on Mountain Island Lake Monday afternoon has been identified by police as A Pao of Charlotte.

The Mount Holly Police Department says they received a call around 3:45 p.m. about a missing swimmer near the 400 block of Mountain Island Road.

Witnesses said they were swimming when Pao went missing. Crews immediately began searching the water near a boat ramp off of Eddie Nichols Drive in Mount Holly.

Officials said Pao's body was found just before 6 p.m. about 20 feet from the shoreline in 15 feet of water.

"Initial statements from witnesses indicate an accidental drowning," police say.

The North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office is working to determine the cause of death.

Multiple units from several fire departments responded to the scene to help search the water.
